Diffraction Gratings for Astronomy

Capabilities

We can design, model, build, and test gratings for any astronomical spectrograph.

Syzygy Optics has developed a set of proprietary software tools for designing gratings.  First we establish crude target parameters using simple rules of thumb. Then we employ rigorous coupled wave analysis (RCWA) software to predict performance for various design choices.  Finally we make the grating and compare measurements from a fiber-fed spectrograph to models from the same RCWA engine.  Testing is done in the production line, so we can adjust process parameters for closed loop control of the manufacturing process.


We have made gratings within the following ranges:


Line density:  400 l/mm to 4000 l/mm

Thickness:     2.5 m to 20 m

Delta n:         0.01 to 0.15  (above 0.1 no UV)

Mean n:         1.28-1.48
